The Great Gatsby Hits Theaters

the_great_gatsby_movie-wideIt is Hollywood’s fifth attempt to bring to screen one of the great American novels, F. Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby. One of the most talked-about films of 2013, this one has a star studded cast including Leonardo DiCaprio, Tobey Maguire, and Carey Mulligan. Director Baz Luhrmann of “Moulin Rouge” and “Romeo and Juliet” fame has built this film to be louder and effects-heavy than any of the previous versions. The contemporary soundtrack and the 3-d spectacle add to the anticipation.

None of the previous versions of the book succeeded to capture the mystery on screen. The first silent version has since been lost but its trailer is still available, and viewable on YouTube (if you want to download it, try a free plugin like Pro Video Downloader). There were other versions in 1949, 1974, and a recent version in 2000, made for television. The Great Gatsby is a short novel, but it has a vagueness about it that is difficult to capture on screen. None of the characters are described in great detail and Luhrmann researched Fitzgerald’s other works in search of more detail. The book comprises of the lyrical reflections of the main character Jay Gatsby. More than the story, it is the way it is told that made the book popular. This has caused the difficulty of adapting it on screen.

Nick Carraway, played by Tobey Maguire, is captivated by the mysterious past of his neighbor Jay Gatsby (Leonardo DiCaprio). He is pulled into Gatsby’s life and becomes a witness to delusion and misfortune. The movie also stars Joel Edgerton, Isla Fisher, Jason Clarke and others.

Wesley Snipes to Join “The Expendables 3”?

With the way Sylvester Stallone’s Expendables franchise is going, the movies alone might become a textbook catalogue featuring big action stars of these last few decades – most notably the 80’s. There is something cool about that, even if the movies themselves don’t reach the desired level of epicness. Still, they make enough money!The-Expendables

After the success of the first two movies, it is not a surprise that Sly is working hard on The Expendables 3. The rumours keep flying around, mostly about which actors will be a part of the next sequel – because really, The Expendables are all about entertaining action scenes and the ensemble cast of big name action stars. Aging action stars, to be precise (some even think they would be better off sitting down in the casinos of the world playing baccarat instead of doing any more movies).

The first two sequels featured Sylvester Stallone, Jason Statham, Jet Li, Dolph Lundgren, Jean-Claude Van Damme, Bruce Willis, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Chuck Norris, Mickey Rourke, Eric Roberts, Randy Couture, Terry Crews and others.

So, who else might join the ranks of tough old mercenaries? It seems that the next most likely candidates include Jackie Chan and Wesley Snipes.

Earlier this month, Wesley Snipes got released from jail, where he served three years for tax fraud. Stallone has repeatedly stated that he would really want to see him in the sequel, and in fact said that he already has a role waiting for him. Sly’s mysterious tweet hinted that Snipes might already be a part of the cast, but an official confirmation is yet to be heard.

Nicholas Cage was also in the negotiations, but the latest reports say he’s out. Jackie Chan still remains a possibility, one many fans are looking forward to.

With over a year to go before the movie is actually done, and with Stallone’s tireless enthusiasm, we will probably be hearing a lot more about the development of The Expendables 3.
